Event: Scholarship application for Microbicides 2006 Conference extended
Global Campaign for Microbicides
**********************************

Dear Global Campaign Partners and Endorsers,

Happy New Year! Just a quick message to make sure that you know that the deadline for Microbicides 2006 scholarship applications has been extended until January 15! Details on how to submit an application are available at http://www.microbicides2006.org/scholarship.htm

This conference only occurs every other year and offers an important learning opportunity for all us interested in the field. According to the website, "The conference intends to provide updates on recent microbicide research, a forum for the discussion of new developments in microbicide research and to present opportunities for knowledge sharing between microbicide researchers, public health workers, advocates, communities and civil society organizations."

For the first time, the conference has increased its focus on Advocacy and Community by adding a conference track specifically on these issues (Track D). Megan Gottemoeller of the Global Campaign is co-chairing this track and we're really looking forward to increased attention to civil society voices at this year's conference.

If you aren't already planning to attend Microbicides 2006 but might like to, we encourage you to consider the possibility of applying for a scholarship before the 15th. In previous years, most of the scholarships have been awarded to applicants in the Global South in recognition of the huge global disparity in resources for things like conference attendance. Anyone sincerely interested in attending the conference but unable to afford the cost, however, should be encouraged to apply for scholarship consideration.

We also wanted to let you know that the Global Campaign will be submitting a list to the Scholarship Committee of applications we particularly wish to draw to their attention. So, if you have submitted a scholarship application, please let us know right away. We'd certainly like to have this information as we decide whose name goes on the list we send to the committee. Of course, there's no telling how our recommendation affects the committee's decision-making (if at all) but we think it's unlikely to harm your chances.

Thanks and hope to see several of you in Cape Town,

Anna
