Dear Stop-TB members,

WHO recommends vaccination in high risk areas, but not to children who are HIV positive (online at: http://www.who.int/vaccine_safety/topics/bcg/immunocompromised/Dec_2006/en/index.html ). Why is there no clear recommendation about vaccination policy in high HIV areas?

The best way to prevent TB transmission is the simple way - open windows, minimize exposure to infectious patients, spend as much time outdoors in the sunlight as possible, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, learn how to detect symptoms early...

The most important thing that we need for TB prevention, especially in homes, is not a controversial vaccine - it is widespread community education and involvement.

Our resources would be far better spent on this (although they hardly are, at the moment) than on debating the scientific technicalities of TB prevention methods whose benefits are questionable.
